Because the terrain and distance of any walk in
the Lake District can vary greatly
the following grading system has been used. The height of ascent, distance and times given for the walk are approximate. The
aim of the walks is to enjoy a day on the fells or the dales of
the Lake District and learn something of its geology, flora,
fauna and history. |
|
| W1 | Valley walk
on good paths, slight gradients, occasional stile. E.g. Elterwater to The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale. |
| W2 | Walk to
lower fells, upper valleys. Slight to moderate gradients on good
paths. E.g. Coniston Coppermines Valley |
| W3 | Moderate
fell walking on good paths. E.g. Lingmoor above Langdale. |
| W4 | High Fells,
mostly on good paths to summits. E.g. Coniston fells |
| W5 | High Fells, mostly approached on good paths, but nearer the summit may become rougher and steeper on scree or rocky paths. |
| W5S | As for W5
but with short sections of exposed moderate scambling. E.g. Striding Edge, Helvellyn. |
| All of the 'Classic Fell Walks' are grade W4 and above | |
